The Orange County Register reports that despite a tough economy, business at California fly shops is booming. The catalyst this time is not A River Runs Through It, but it is the result of pop culture – specifically the fact that “chicken plumage” is currently much in demand for feathery hair extensions among en vogue women (and Steven Tyler).
Fashion conscious women of the type rarely seen in my local tackle store (in fact, I’m not sure there’s ever been a woman in any of the shops I visit most frequently) are placing big orders for fly-tying feathers, dropping a few c-notes at a time to stay on top of this burgeoning trend.
What’s next? Will women raid Bass Pro Shops for spinnerbait skirts? Will those in walleye country find a way to employ Lindy Rigs among otherwise haute couture? Inquiring minds want to know.
