Casting For A Cure

Dave Mercer's Casting for a Cure is a non-profit initiative, fully endorsed by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Casting for a Cure was founded in 2005 in honor of Dave's mother, Ann Mercer, who, like too many Canadians, lost her battle with cancer. It is our commitment to raise funds through the angling community to help in the fight to end cancer.

Cast A Thon For Cancer

What an event this turned out to be!
On Saturday, May 10th, 2008, Shimano held their first national Casting for a Cure Cast-a-thon across Canada.   Over 45 retailers across Canada participated in this one event.  These retailers signed up individuals to particpate in a national cast-a-thon where each participant would cast for 5 minutes straight making as many casts as they could in that 5 minutes.  These individuals collected pledges for their participation which benefited Dave Mercer’s Casting for a Cure, which, in turn benefits the Canadian Cancer Society.

Many of the individuals were encouraged by various events in their lives.  They each had been affected by cancer in some way, either themselves directly, or by close friends or loved ones.  One story was of a young boy in Guelph who had recently lost his older brother to cancer at the age of 26.  It is because of individuals like these and the great retailers that supported the event that we were able to work together to help fight cancer. The pledges are still trickling in and once all pledges are received, we will report the total funds raised for Dave Mercer’s Casting for a Cure.

Thank you to all those who participated in Shimano’s first Casting for a Cure Cast-a-thon and thank you to all the retailers that went above and beyond to make sure this event was a success.  Your hard work and efforts are making a difference!  Thank you also to Shimano for such a great event and we look forward to an even better event in 2009!
